On the 1st November 2011 Rock Haven Magazine was lucky to interview Nathan Leone, singer of Madina Lake, before their show in Cologne, Underground.  Nathan talked about their new album “World War III”, the message behind
their music, his most embarrassing moment on stage and much more…

Rock Haven: Your new album is entitled “World War III”.
Nathan: Yes!

RH: Why have you chosen the name?
N: Well, I think for one nowadays, with so many bands and so many albums releasing, it’s important to have a compelling title right off the bat. And it’s also important for our message in its entirety and that being in our opinion the only real battle we have left is not a war of nations or war of religions. Instead it’s an interpersonal war of the mind and of the ego. You know, if people can destroy their ego instead of let it run away with them, I think the world would be a much more peaceful and better place. Because it seems like everything, from materialism to having to look better, be better, have more power, it’s all ego based things and I think without the ego that people can be peaceful and happy.

“Halloween 2008 we played a small club in San Antonio, TX. We arrived at the club to find that all the other bands were dressing up. We forfeited our soundcheck and drove to a costume shop. At this hour, the options were slim. Naively, we thought, ‘hey…let’s be the Village People and we’ll walk on stage to an intro of “YMCA. That’ll be hilarious.” I was the cop, Dan the Indian, Mateo the sailor, and Nathan was the sleeveless, mustache wearing, Harley guy. We’re small dudes, so we crammed into kid’s sized costumes. The house lights went down, the faders went up. This was the first sign that we missed the mark with this year’s choice. The 27 kids in the crowd didn’t seem to recognize the song, which leaves little to no chance our costumes will be anything but awkward.
We mosey our way onto the stage and the song is cut early. The lights come up to lukewarm clapping. Then the click track goes out, so Dan isn’t starting the song. The 30 seconds stretched to months in our heads. Nathan had the unimaginable task of dealing with this one. He nervously stumbles to the right, then back to the left, where he begins to trip over the floor monitor. He huffs out hard and blows his mustache off before he took a desperate swing of the leg to stay vertical. This only served to propel him straight into Mateo. They both went down. Not a drop of sound in the whole place.”

It’s become cliche for bands to say they’ve overcome adversity during the recording of an album. They all-too-often have a lineup change, a snafu with the record company, or some other inconvenience that should hardly be confused with life-or-death.

Then there’s Madina Lake.

The Chicago-area band is more alternative rock than heavy metal per se. Think Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance. Madina Lake has toured with both.

But they’re no strangers to San Antonio. They still have a bevy of heavy rock songs. And their story needs to be told.

Today marks the release of Madina Lake’s third album, World War III. While it’s also cliche for rock journalists to say that a record is an artist’s “most accomplished to date,” there’s no denying World War III is by far the band’s most personal. Just the fact it was recorded with all four members (singer Nathan Leone, bassist Matthew Leone, guitarist Mateo Camargo and drummer Dan Torelli) intact was an accomplishment in itself.

Madina Lake’s first single from the upcoming album World War III onsale online here!

Madina Lake’s first single “Hey Superstar” is available online for purchase HERE. Fans can also listen to a full stream of the song at Altpress.com HERE. Madina Lake’s highly anticipated new studio album World War III is set for release on September 13th and the band will kick off a North American tour in support (early tour dates below). Madina Lake just completed a series of dates on the Vans Warped Tour as well as the U.K.’s Download Festival at Donington Park this past June.   “Hey Superstar” will impact Alternative Radio on August 8th.
Madina Lake lead singer Nathan Leone explains the song, “It feels like everything is becoming completely plastic and contrived lately. From cosmetic adjustments like Botox to technological ‘fixes’ like Photoshop, Auto-Tune, etc., there’s this implication that to be accepted you have to be anything but yourself. That’s way too much pressure. I think most people are pretty kickass just as they are, and removing that pressure would probably lead to a much happier life. ‘Hey Superstar’ is a sentiment to the ‘perfect’ people that the rest of us are just fine, thanks.”

New song appears on GuitarHero.
